Travel Essentials : Long Flights
I'm heading off to Singapore and Thailand in just a few short weeks, and I've been researching the internet to death about what to pack for the 17+ hour flight. We're flying straight from SFO to Singapore, which is both great and not so great.
Great because we can get comfy, and not worry about missing any connecting flights or airport drama. Not so great because we'll be in the same seats for almost an entire day. Getting to paradise can't be easy, right? Since I've never been on a flight for this long, I was feeling a little apprehensive. We're flying Singapore Air, which is supposed to be amazing even in coach, and a little research has really helped put me at ease. In the process I stumbled upon a bunch of awesome tips that I'm planning on implementing, but never would have thought of myself!
1. Eat and Drink
Buy one of those gigantic water bottles (or bring an empty through security to fill up later). It's super easy to get dehydrated on a flight, and bringing your own large bottle means you don't have to keep asking the flight attendant for a refill, and you can keep track of how much you've had to drink!
Don't forget snacks! Try to pick snacks that are flavorful (taste buds don't work so well at cruising altitude) but aren't too sugary or salty. Seaweed, beef jerky, and granola bars all the way.
2. Check the in flight entertainment system beforehand
I never would have thought to do this! If you check it out first, you can download movies/shows beforehand and won't make the mistake of duplicating what's already on offer. Also--podcasts. I've gotten completely sucked into Lore, Tanis, Rabbits, and The Black Tapes. Evidently creepy, mysterious podcasts are totally my thing. I also love downloading a bunch of books onto my iPad. This way I don't have to cart books around with me, and if I get bored there are plenty to choose from.
3. Let's not get sick, okay?
I hate thinking about all the gross, shared germs floating around the plane. Eww. I'm a little crazy, but I like to disinfect (with a Lysol wipe or similar) my arm rests, seat belt, screen, tray table, and the wall/window if I'm in a window seat. Pretty much anything you'd touch, I wipe off. I've heard from flight attendant friends (and the internet) that the seat back pocket is the nastiest place on the plane other than the bathroom.
I just started using Care/Of and hopefully they help with keeping me healthy for my trip. It's only been a few days, so I'm not sure if they're working yet or not, but the packaging is on point!
4. In-Flight Skincare
I'm obsessed with Korean skincare, and I'm all for ditching makeup on flights. This trip I'm going to moisturize like crazy before boarding, and I'm going to try a sheet mask at 30,000 feet if my skin feels extra dry. Just make sure your hands are clean before touching your face!
I'm not confident I'll be able to sleep, but I'm fully embrace the idea of resting even if you can't actually sleep. Even at home, when I can't fall asleep, I'll close my eyes and just try to relax. I've got my black out eye mask and my earplugs, and some noise reducing headphones. Fingers crossed I don't get too jet-lagged!
