The problem with winter here is that the highs tend to hover around 55-60 degrees. If you live somewhere where it snows, 55 degrees sounds awesome, but if you live here, it can feel like winter never actually arrives. It's mild, and gets sunny for at least some part of the day pretty often. The California Drought has been ever present for the last few years, so we haven't gotten much rain, or much snow in the mountains. I'm not saying a mild winter is a bad thing, but it does make it hard to figure out how much warmth you really need in your outfits. Since layering is key, one heavy layer on the outside doesn't always work. If you get hot, carrying around a huge wool coat sucks. Sometimes, I wish winter in The City meant snow, just so I could justify having a bunch of different pretty coats.
This week's chilly weather (finally!) made me crave a new coat, and some cozy pieces to go with it. I can't really justify buying a long wool coat since my coat from last year is totally fine, and SF doesn't really get cold, but I can dream! I love the J.Crew stadium coat, and all the colors it comes in. I really like the easy but structured silhouette, and this candy pink color. I think putting it on daily would really pep up my mood, especially when everything gets grey mid-winter.
I carry a big tote bag to work everyday, and often out adventuring on weekends too, but also love small clutch purses. I've been eyeing a Clare V flat clutch for ages now, and love the leopard print. I think that adding a small bag to your outfit instantly makes you look put together and chic. It says that you have your shit together, and know exactly what you need to bring with you. They look awesome tucked under your arm, and are easy to keep track of in a crowded bar. I'm going to LA for Thanksgiving, and plan on exploring with my boyfriend, so I might just treat myself to an early birthday present at her Silver Lake or Santa Monica location. If anyone has any other LA advice or must see shops let me know!
The big, fat, cozy, oversize sweater is from Madewell. I just ordered one for myself, and can't wait to wear it on repeat. It is really oversize, which I love, and is super soft and warm. In The City, I'll wear an oversize sweater with jeans and a tank, and can easily go from day to night. When the temps do drop, it's still slim enough to layer under an actual jacket. If you layer a big sweater over a simple but nice tank, you can always remove the sweater, keep your jacket on, and still look put together and be comfy. I try to always wear a layer under my sweaters so that if I get hot I can take it off.
I threw in the Gap poncho since their Friends and Family event (additional 40% off online and 50% off in stores) runs through the weekend. With the additional discount, the poncho comes in around $50 and qualifies for free shipping. I haven't seen this piece in person, but other reviews claim it's waterproof. This piece might come in handy if the promised El Nino decides to show up.
I love that it feels like fall, and that the air feels crisp in the mornings. Karl has made some appearances lately, and cuddle weather is back. I'm happy to be able to wear boots and sweaters and not sweat to death. I'm excited to drink my coffee without ice, and to sleep with a pile of quilts and comforters on the bed. Basically, I'm thankful that San Francisco feels like its old self again, even if everything is changing.
Cheers to apple cider, sweaters and little lights. Happy Fall!
